Technology Must Remain a Tool, Not a Master
Technology is not inherently harmful. Islam does not reject tools, progress, or innovation.
But Islam strongly warns against becoming enslaved by anything other than Allah.
Today many people no longer control technology. Technology controls:
- their attention
- emotions
- sleep
- desires
- self-worth
- time
Algorithms are designed to exploit
- impulsiveness
- outrage
- insecurity
- addiction
- comparison
Every notification interrupts presence. Every unnecessary distraction weakens inner stillness.
The issue is not the phone itself. The issue is whether the human being remains spiritually sovereign over it.
·
Modern Reflection
Many people
- check phones hundreds of times daily
- wake up with notifications
- sleep beside screens
- consume content until exhaustion
- lose the ability to be alone with their thoughts
This creates spiritual and emotional fragmentation.
·
Islamic Practice
Configure technology intentionally
- notifications off by default
- remove addictive apps if necessary
- schedule phone-free time
- avoid endless scrolling after 'Isha
- protect prayer from interruption
- create spaces in the day without stimulation
Technology should serve your values — not reshape your values.
